Some parents of under-7s may think that they don't need to register as they automatically get a free school meal. Others, although entitled to the funding, don't register because their children are taking a packed lunch.

However, parents who qualify and are registered for free school meals can also make sure that their children's school receives a lump sum of £1,350 Pupil Premium per primary school child and £935 per secondary child. This cash can then be used to fund many benefits such as school trips, uniforms and PE kit, music lessons, additional support to boost their English and Math's and much more.

Cllr Lynne Doherty, West Berkshire's Executive Member for Education Services said, "The Pupil Premium appears to be rather misunderstood and subsequently under claimed in West Berkshire. In addition to the fact that our schools are not benefiting from the extra money, claiming Pupil Premium can help to narrow the attainment gap and ensure all children have a level playing field from which they can develop and progress."

Make sure your child doesn't miss out. Register for Pupil Premium or call West Berkshire Council (01635) 42400 and ask for the Free School Meals team
